The Kent Cultural Alliance (KCA) in partnership with Chesapeake Heartland: An African American Humanities Project, with additional support from The Hedgelawn Foundation, is offering five (5) artist fellowships for spring and summer 2021.
The fellowships seek to engage artists who can research and interpret stories gathered and archived in the Chesapeake Heartland digital archive, with the permission of the story owner, and create a new work of art based on that story. The works can be in any medium but all must be able to be rendered digitally or with video to live as a permanent part of the Chesapeake Heartland archive.
Selected artists will share their concept with KCA before embarking on the project. Artists will be asked to share (virtually if necessary) their process once they have reached a half way point, and before May 30, 2021, with students in one fine arts class at one of the five Kent County Public Schools.
KCA will host an exhibit of the works created by the selected artists in the fall of 2021. A subcommittee of the KCA Board will select the winning five applicants.
Applications must be in the form of CV or Portfolio/Body of Work (no more than five examples of work please), a bio and an artist statement. Statements should focus on the Artist’s desire to be a part of this project with KCA and Chesapeake Heartland and why the Artist is interested in interpreting stories of the African American Experience in Kent County. Artists of Color are encouraged to apply.
Application deadline is Wednesday, March 31, 2021 by 5 pm. Applications can be delivered via email to firstname.lastname@example.org – or by-hand on or before March 31 at 5 pm. An Appointment MUST be made to drop off an application. Email KCA Director, John Schratwieser at email@example.com or call at 410-778-3700.
Fellowship Artists will receive a $1500 honoraria and can apply for additional funding for materials for up to $100 per winning applicant.
