Jeanne Anne Harkey of Chestertown, MD died peacefully with family at her side on a still Sunday afternoon, January 17, 2021, at Heron Point Senior Community. She was 93.
Born on February 7, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John J. and Helen D. Hines, neé Goodman, she married the late William T. Harkey, Sr. on April 1, 1945 and was his wife of 64 years until his death on July 2, 2009.
A consummate homemaker and steady matriarch, she was always the last to eat at the holiday meals she prepared for her family. Never an unkind word, her ubiquitous giggles and disarming smile, which belied a fierce intellect, won her many friends. Expert bridge-playing won her numerous awards. Mrs. Harkey was steadfast in the pursuit of her passions, including golf, cooking, and underwatering houseplants. Her love of animals was open, her Catholic faith private. She loved Chestertown, where she lived for the last 30 years of her life, but it was her family she cherished most.
Mrs. Harkey is survived by daughter Joanne Keegan of Conshohocken, PA; son William T. Harkey, Jr., and his wife Thérèse-Marie of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren Monica Kateri Harkey and her husband Nick Guries of Madison, WI, and Jonathan Michael Harkey of Washington, D.C.; and a great-grandson Finnegan Guries of Madison, WI.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John J. Hines, Jr. and her first grandson, Christopher Keegan.
Services will be held privately due to COVID-19. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Harkey’s name can be made to the Humane Society of Kent County.
