George Washington visited Kent County on May 13, 1773, on his way to New York to deliver his stepson, John Parke Custis, to King’s College, now Columbia University.

The party started out from Annapolis. George Washington recorded in his diary:

“After Breakfast & abt. 8 Oclock set out for Rockhall where we arrivd in two hours & 25 Minutes. Dind on Board the Annapolis at Chester Town & Supped & lodgd at Mr. Ringolds.”

The Washingtons continued on the next morning.
