Monday’s meeting of the Chestertown Town Council was cancelled for lack of a quorum and will be held tonight, Tuesday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m.
Ward 4 Councilwoman Meghan Efland was on a scheduled vacation, Ward 1 Councilman David Foster had a family emergency and Mayor Chris Cerino was a no-show at the last minute. No explanation was given for Cerino’s absence.
A quorum of three council members is needed to hold a meeting. Foster told the Kent Pilot he will attend tonight’s meeting along with Ward 3 Councilman Tom Herz and Ward 3 Councilman Ellsworth Tolliver.
Town Hall confirmed that Cerino will not attend tonight’s meeting.
A big item on the agenda was the Recreation Commission’s plan for redevelopment of the AJAX basketball court, and 40 attendees were waiting for the start of the meeting Monday evening before it was cancelled.
Cerino came under fire for off-mic comments prior to the March 15 meeting where he and Chestertown Zoning Administrator Kees de Mooy commiserated that the commission’s plan for AJAX was misguided from a planning perspective and from a black history perspective.
The off-mic comments brought rebuke from the Social Action Committee for Racial Justice and members of the town’s black community.
